Oeben convertible desk Ca 1750 made in 2007
The original convertible desk was made for Madame de Pompadour in 1750 by jean-François Oeben.
The whole piece is covered with marquetry, I have made it in all of the original woods to show what it
would have looked like when it was first made.
I made  several new developments making this piece.
A vast improvement in the detail of the marquetry. This can be seen in the large picture of the basket
below. (the basket is 19 mm wide). The top contains a basket of flowers with tulips, daffodils, roses
and carnations. With fish scale marquetry on each side, made from bloodwood and stained sycamore.
surrounded with boxwood, ebony, and amaranth banding.
The tulipwood around the marquetry panels is hand made containing over 130 separate pieces of
wood per inch. This makes a big difference to the overall look of the piece compared to previous
pieces. There is also an authentic mechanism based on the original, By realising the catch underneath.
The draw slides out and the top slides back. The two cupboard doors are relieved by small buttons
on the front, a spring inside the cupboards pushes them open.
The piece is French polished and finished with cast bronze/gold plate ormolu mounts.
